Herbal medicine uses remedies made from plants. Medical herbalists are trained in the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors but have time to take a more holistic approach to illness. Ideally, the underlying cause is treated rather than just the symptoms of a disease. The remedies are chosen to gently support the body and help it use its own healing powers to restore balance and health.
Many complaints can respond well to herbal treatment with examples including heart and circulatory issues, some anxiety and stress disorders, respiratory problems, digestive issues, gynaecological problems, skin conditions and many more.
During the first consultation a detailed medical history is taken. Questions are asked about your complaint, past medical history, family history and any medications currently taken. Diet and lifestyle will also be considered. Bespoke herbal medicines, in the form of tinctures or herbal teas, are then prescribed together with any dietary advice and lifestyle suggestions which could be helpful. External applications such as creams and lotions may also be dispensed, as well as some dietary supplements. A shorter follow up consultation usually occurs 3-4 weeks later.
